Coconut Creme Pie

This is one of my all time favorite pies --- and favorite pie crust recipes! A big THANK YOU to my new friend, Catrena Durgan, for sharing both recipes with me!
Pie Crust:
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup shortning
1 T. Sugar
1 1/4 cups flour
1 egg yolk
1/2 tsp. vinegar
2 T. ice water
Combine butter/shortening.  Cut in dry ingredients.
Add egg, water, vinegar.
Shape into ball and refrigerate 1 hour
Roll out on a flour surface, place in pie pan, prick with a fork,  bake @ 450 degrees for 10 minutes.
Yield: One top/bottom pie crust or two single pie crusts.
OR if you love pie crust as much as I do - one thick single pie crust!!
You'll want to make sure you have a little of this dough left over to make little cinnamon bites out of!!! My mom never made a pie, but what she made these for us kids with the leftover dough!
Coconut Creme Pie
2 T. butter
3/4 cup sugar
1/8 tsp. salt
1/3 cup flour OR corn starch
2 eggs well beaten
2 cups milk
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
3/4 cup coconut
1 tub Cool Whip (8 oz.)
Combine butter, sugar, salt, flour, and eggs in a medium sized pan on stove top.  Add milk slowly, stirring constantly.
Cook until thick.
Remove from heat and add vanilla.
Refrigerate until cook and add the coconut and 1/2 the Cool Whip
Put filling in baked and cooled pie crust.
Top with remaining Cool Whip.
Garnish with toasted coconut.
Chill
Pour yourself a cup of coffee and enjoy a generous portion of pie while browsing your favorite food blogs, reading a good book, or catching up with a friend!

Scrunchy Flower Tutorial

Today I'm going to show you how I make these glimmer misted scrunchy flowers.  You don't have to make them glimmer misted --- just skip the first step if you want to use regular cardstock/DP.
1. Glimmer mist a piece of white paper with desired color and heat set (dry) with embossing gun (or in my case a Milwaukee heat gun from Goodwill for something like $2 - told you I'm cheap! Before that I used the gas flame on my oven to emboss!)
2. Using the Blossom Dies cut out 3 big blossoms (from cardstock) and 3 small blossoms (from dictionary page) I cut the small ones out before misting them with pearl white glimmer mist and heat setting.
[You could also use flower punches in the desire size -- doesn't have to be nestabilities.]
3. Wet with water and scrunch up
4. Unfold and "pinch" in the middle to form a crinkly top -- heat set again (till mostly dry)
5. Poke a hole through centers with a paper piercer
 6. Using a brad, assemble flower
7. Cover the brad with a button, pearl, or something else of your choice (using a glue gun)
8. Attach to your card or project

      Glimmer Misted Flowers

My homemade glimmer mist (see yesterday's post) is giving me lots of enjoyment. You can see an example of the blue mist on the above flower.  This was white paper that I misted with the homemade metallic blue mist - heat set - and made a flower out of. Here's a closer view
Here you'll see a how it works on blue cardstock -- gives it a pearly look.

      Homemade Glimmer Mist

I've never bought glimmer mist before, I guess it's because I'm too cheap! (smile)  Not sure what I was looking for, but I stumbled upon a couple You Tube videos about making your own mist.  The first few I watched still had too many ingredients I'd have to buy to entice me, but then I discovered a "recipe" for making glimmer mist that is easy and cheap to make! This mist takes only two ingredients -- water and metallic paint.  Since I already had some Metallic Pearly White on hand (for painting my homemade dew drops) I decided to try it and see how it worked.  Here's a photo of two card fronts - side by side to show you the difference.
Can you tell in the photo that the one on the right is a pearly/sparkly white?  It's exactly like some expensive paper I had a while back.  (It looks a LOT better in real life - pictures can't quite capture it.)
Dollar Tree sells little travel size bottles  - you can get 3 for a $1.  Of course they don't all have the sprayer top, but it's not a problem for me to switch the sprayer when I need it (it's not like I'm going to use it on every project).
You can see I also recycled a travel size hair spray bottle .  In the above pictures you'll see two Extreme Glitter Acrylic Paints --- these both came out with more glitter than color.  Nice if you want to add glitter to a project - but doesn't seem to add a lot of color to your paper.

      Glimmer mist recipe:
      ~ 2 - 3 Tablespoons paint
~ Water (fill bottle 2/3 full)
      Optional:
~ 1 Tablespoon rubbing alcohol (to keep the sprayer from clogging)

Here's a breakdown of the cost:
      • The bottle of paint only costs about $1.47 (and you don't use it all)
      • The bottle cost about 33 cents (if you buy the 3 for a $1)
      • The end product only cost about 70 cents as apposed to $6.99!!
I'm not the kind of person that needs every color -- in fact I'm pretty happy with what I have right now. No big investment, but a lot of satisfaction and enjoyment!

Here's the other card I made WITHOUT the mist --- I'll post the top one again so you can compare the two.
Can you see how the second one shimmers?  I think this pearl one is my favorite of all of them -- love white pearly paper!
      Supplies used:
      • White/ Blue Cardstock
      • Vellum Sentiments
        • ColorBok
        • Making Memories
      • Homemade Glimmer Mist
      • Homemade Dew Drops
        • painted with pearly nail polish
      •  Butterfly Die and embossing folder (Provo Craft)
      • Butterfly punch
      • Martha Stewart Corner punch (can't remember the name of this one)
I'll leave you with a "teaser" for tomorrows post -- glimmer misted flowers!
