Since you mentioned the "boring box", I thought I'd share an idea I recently came across ... A lady sends care packages to her deployed husband and covers the inside of the box (bottom, sides and flaps) with bright scrapbook paper. I'm sure you could use gift wrap, too, to cut down on costs.
