I recently showed a couple friends how to up-cycle cracker/cereal boxes into faux weathered wood backgrounds. We all created window/bird cards with the finished product.
To create the weathered wood look:
- Trim a thin piece of cardboard to size (use the reverse side if you're up-cycling a cereal box)
- Score some lines (you choose how wide - mine were 3/4 inch)
- Paint your cardboard with white school glue
- While still tacky, paint a thin layer of your main color over top the glue
- Heat set or allow to air dry (if you did it right,cracks will appear)
- Add an accent color and heat set again
- Re-score your lines
- Sand portions of your finished piece to give it a weathered look

- Gray and White Acrylic Paint
- Sandpaper
- Cereal Box cardboard
- Martha Stewart Scoring Board
- Elmer's Glue

Oh I love this, you did a fabulous job with the wood look and I like the distressed look of the window frame too, love the wreath with the cheesecloth in the background, terrific coloring of the bird!
